Canyon Shade & Creek Cool-Down

Trade slickrock exposure for a walk between canyon walls, then rinse off the dust in Oak Creek.
This route leans into shelter rather than summits — you'll spend your morning walking into a canyon where the walls themselves offer some protection from sun and the worst of any building weather, instead of standing on an open ridge. A short add-on canyon nearby lets you stretch the legs further if you're feeling good. Then it's over to the creek for the rest of the day, floating in cold water while the afternoon does whatever it's going to do.
The stops
-
1
Boynton Canyon Trailhead
Walls provide partial shade for parts of the walk — still keep an eye on the sky since it's a canyon, not a shelter. Go before midday.
-
2
Fay Canyon Trailhead
Shorter canyon walk nearby if you want a second leg-stretch before heading to the water; skip it if you're short on time.
-
3
Slide Rock State Park
6871 N AZ-89A, Sedona, AZ 86336
Save the afternoon for this — cold creek water is the best answer to both the heat and the humidity ahead of storms. Arrive by early afternoon before the lot fills.
