The Long Desert Drive

A proper drive out to the farther trailheads for a real day-trip feel — but strictly a dawn mission given the heat.
If you want the drive-worthy adventure feel, this is it: head out to the more remote trailheads while it's still cool, treat anything past mid-morning as a hard stop, and use the drive back to cool off at a couple of quiet garden spots near campus before storms arrive.
The stops
-
1
King Canyon Trailhead
Farthest trailhead — worth the drive, but plan to be hiking by dawn and off the trail before 9am.
-
2
Veteran's Access Trailhead
Only add this on if you're still ahead of the heat and feeling good — otherwise skip straight to cooldown.
-
3
Prehistoric Garden
Shaded stop near campus, good place to decompress after the drive back.
-
4
Nuestro Jardín (Barrio Garden)
Quick barrio garden wander if you still have time before afternoon storms build.
